I suspect an electrical short.

Have a technician go through everything and test/troubleshoot the source of the short and any collateral damage that may have been caused.

Not to be an ass, but It sounds like you know just enough about the Z to be dangerous.

PS -- I was just thinking that perhaps an auxillary power cable from the battery wasn't properly protected and may have shorted near the firewall. I have a power lead for my alarm system in that same area of the engine bay. I have my doubts about blaming factory Nissan electrical. The design, quality, and engineering seem bulletproof to me (as far as causing a fire is concerned).
